Andiron Hanaire series
Take Five -- Andiron Hanaire (flower vases)
16.25 x 6 x 4.5 inches (each vase)

The andiron series of hanaire play a vital role in the successful firing of
the Dancing Fire Wood Kiln.
Flower vases and sculptures are arranged in a criss cross pattern on the floor of the
side stoke fire box in the first chamber of the Dancing Fire Wood Kiln. This loading
strategy creates an "andiron" of clay forms that keeps the burning wood elevated so
that air can be drawn through the fuel and maintain high temperatures.
The ceramic "andiron" as it appears before unloading. The vases are buried in ash.
Some breakage is expected as wood is thrown directly on these pieces for almost
two days. The pieces that survive this severe pummeling often display subtle and
unique colors and textures.
Three wads that were used as separators between layers of andiron vases are visible
by the masking of the wadding. Colors and textures vary from the bottom to the top of
the stack of andiron vases.
